Ecko — Privacy Policy

A language learning app by Alterras LLC

The short version

Ecko stores your flashcards and study data locally on your device. We collect anonymous usage analytics (which you can opt out of) and crash reports to improve the app. We never collect personal information, and your study content never leaves your device.

Data stored on your device

• Flashcard decks and cards. All your imported decks, cards, and media (images, audio) are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. This data is never uploaded to our servers or shared with third parties.
• Study progress. Review history, scheduling data (FSRS algorithm state), session statistics, and accuracy metrics are stored locally. This data stays on your device.
• Preferences. Your app settings are stored locally using UserDefaults.

Speech and microphone

Ecko uses your device's microphone and Apple's Speech Recognition framework to transcribe your spoken answers during study sessions. Speech processing is handled by Apple's on-device or server-side speech recognition (depending on your device and iOS version). Ecko does not record, store, or transmit audio. We have no access to your speech data — it is processed entirely by Apple's APIs.

Analytics (optional)

Ecko uses PostHog to collect anonymous usage analytics. This helps us understand how the app is used and where to improve it. Analytics data includes:

• Aggregate study statistics (cards reviewed, session counts)
• Feature usage patterns (which study modes are popular)
• App lifecycle events

Analytics data does not include:

• Your flashcard content or study material
• Personal information (name, email, location)
• Screen recordings or screenshots

You can opt out at any time in Settings → "Help Improve Ecko". When opted out, no analytics data is collected or sent.

Crash reporting

Ecko uses Sentry to collect crash reports when the app encounters an error. Crash reports include technical information about the error (stack traces, device model, OS version) but do not include personal information or your study content. This helps us identify and fix bugs.

In-app purchases

Ecko offers subscriptions through Apple's StoreKit. All transactions are handled entirely by Apple. We do not receive or store any payment information.

• Apple Speech Recognition — Voice transcription (processed by Apple)
• Apple StoreKit — In-app purchases (processed by Apple)

No advertising networks or ad identifiers are used.

Children's privacy

Ecko does not knowingly collect any personal information from children. The app does not require accounts or personal information from any user.

Changes to this policy

If we update this policy, we will revise the date below. Material changes will be noted in the app's release notes.
